Join Oxford International Relations Society and Professor Acharya for an exciting discussion on “Global IR” that transcends the divide between the West and the Rest. How can the discipline of IR look past and beyond the Westphalian foundation myth? More importantly, how should we transition from a Eurocentric, post-imperial world to a pluralistic global order? Global IR may compels us to recognize the diversity that exists in our world, seek common ground, and resolve conflicts -- is it too good to be true?
Amitav Acharya is the UNESCO Chair in Transnational Challenges and Governance and Distinguished Professor at American University. He is the first non-Western scholar to be elected the President of the International Studies Association (ISA). Professor Acharya has received three ISA Distinguished Scholar Awards for his "contribution to non-Western IR theory and inclusion”, “influence, intellectual works and mentorship”, and “extraordinary impact” in globalizing the study of IR. His recent books include Constructing Global Order (Cambridge 2018); The End of American World Order (Polity 2014, 2018) and The Making of Global International Relations (Cambridge 2019: with Barry Buzan).
