Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey from 2009 to 2015, Babacan was initially given the task of steering the Turkish economic reforms in the early 2000s, negotiating multi-billion dollar IMF loans. He was appointed as the Chief Negotiator for the country's accession bid to the European Union, a position he pioneered for four years.
